Chewacla State Park

Posted by Molly B. on 4/14/2006

Chewacla is a fun place to have a picnic, hike or play. It costs a dollar per car to enter and you can drive to several different locations depending on what you're looking for. They have picnic areas, covered picnic areas, a waterfall, a bridge you can fish off of and a playground. They even have seesaws which are rare on playgrounds these days. There are several hiking trails and several open fields for frisbee or whatever else you may want to do.

Return to Nature

As far as state parks go, Chewacla is probably not great. However, if you take it for what its worth then it is fantastic. As mentioned before it is very conveniently located which is one of the main selling points. Also, it is fairly cheap. There is fishing available, but I can almost guarantee you will not catch anything. You are also limited to the shore line unless you bring your own boat. There is also a nice swimming area featuring a floating dock with a diving board. The water is rarely very clear, so if you can get past that you will be fine. The trails are not maintained that well, some are pretty rough especially for youngsters. Particularly the trails going down to the waterfalls. If you visit I recommend going to the waterfalls, but beware that this will be a workout both going down and up to them. Overall, if you live in the area give them a shot one day and decide for yourself. I believe you will find it is worth the cost of admission.

A great family park

Chewacla is a great state park for hiking and outdoor bbq parties. It is close to town, and easy to access. The daily rate is reasonable too. We had a bbq there in the spring with no problems at all. There was plenty for the kids to do -- the waterfalls are very cool to visit. The facilities were clean and accessible. Get there early if you want to use the covered bbq areas, and be aware that the park closes fairly early.
